Until the mid-1950s, Brazil was an essentially rural country. That is, more people lived in the countryside than in the city. This began to change during the rule of Juscelino Kubitschek (1956 - 1961). Juscelino built Brasilia and gave a big boost to industrial development. With that, the cities grew. In the countryside, conditions were not good for the rural workers. So a lot of people started out there looking for a better life. This mass migration from the countryside to the cities is known as rural exodus.
