One of the best known and most used guiding instruments is the compass.
It is made up of a magnetized needle, placed in a horizontal plane and suspended by its center of gravity, so that it can rotate freely, and which always orientates in a direction close to the geographic north-south direction.
Thus, it has the pointed tip (usually in red), indicating the direction that leads to the earth's magnetic south, or, equivalently, to a point near the earth's geographic north pole.
The word compass comes from Italian compasswhich means "small box" of wood from boxwood (family plan Buxaceae).
